CATT opens 2019 award of excellence nominations

Canada – CATT, a leading organization for the trenchless industry in Canada and focused on recognizing outstanding people, organizations, technologies and projects that are instrumental in advancing our industry locally and internationally, invites submissions for the 2019 CATT Award of Excellence (AOE). The AOE may be awarded to any of the following who have made a significant contribution to the trenchless industry in the preceding year: Individuals, Companies, Organizations, and Projects. For more details, check out the guidelines. The deadline for submissions is May 31st.

Breakthrough at Emisor Oriente
Friday, March 15, 2019 Mexico – A breakthrough ceremony was held at Lot 5 of the Emisor Oriente project in February. The contractor, Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA) completed the 6km drive with an 8.93m-diameter Robbins EPBM. The drive required excavation through mixed face conditions, notably containing abrasive basalt.

HRBT team to build Virginia extension
Monday, February 18, 2019 US – Virginia governor Ralph Northam announced February 15 that the Commonwealth of Virginia has selected Hampton Roads Connector Partners, a design-build team, to deliver the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project. The fixed price (USD 3.3bn) and fixed completion date (November 1, 2025) contract is expected to be executed in April.
California bill would reduce impact statements

Wednesday, January 30, 2019 USA – Sandvik has acquired Artisan Vehicle Systems, a manufacturer of battery-powered underground mining equipment. Artisan is based in California and its main competence is battery packs, electric motors, power electronics, software and control systems.
HNTB adds to Seattle staff
Thursday, January 10, 2019 US – Mike Wongkaew, joined HNTB Corporation’s national tunnel group on January 7 as national tunnel practice lead-Northwest and associate vice president. He is based in Bellevue, Washington, and oversees all tunnelling work on the Sound Transit West Seattle and Ballard Link Extension Project. He also serves as an accomplished resource to the firm’s clients and projects across the nation, the company said, adding in his previous capacity, Wongkaew served as chief tunnel engineer for research and development of an innovative underground transportation system.
Epiroc acquires Canadian exploration tools manufacturer
Monday, January 07, 2019 Canada – Epiroc has acquired Fordia, a manufacturer of exploration drilling tools. The company provides exploration drilling tools such as diamond bits, down-the-hole tools, drill rods and drill casings, as well as water treatment systems and pumps, used by mining houses and drilling contractors.
Aecon/Traylor to build Second Narrows Tunnel
Monday, November 05, 2018 Canada – Aecon Group announced November 1 that a joint venture between Aecon (40 per cent) and Traylor Bros Inc. (60 per cent) has been awarded a CAD 267M (USD 203M) contract by Metro Vancouver (Greater Vancouver Water District) for the Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel project in British Columbia.

Metrolinx awards Finch West contract
Friday, May 11, 2018 Canada – Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx announced May 7 that Mosaic Transit Group (Mosaic) has signed a contract valued at $2.5 billion to design, build, finance and maintain the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. Mosaic's successful proposal will deliver the LRT by 2023.
