Following its earlier refusal to refund conference expenditure for the now cancelled WTC 2020, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has finally relented. In a joint statement with the ITA, the IEM pledges to refund 70% of monies already paid by sponsors, exhibitors and registered participants, and a full refund of payments made for side events such as the gala dinner, site visits and other activities.

Submission of abstracts for WTC 2021 is still open but the deadline of Tuesday June 2 2020 is only days away. ITA-AITES has advised potential authors that abstracts should have a maximum 200 words and relate to the general topics of the conference. Abstracts can only be submitted online.

Harvey Parker passes away aged 83

Dr Harvey Parker, one of the best-known and respected personalities in the global tunnelling fraternity, has died following a two-year battle with cancer. His career spanned 55 years during which he made significant contributions to education, theory and tunnelling practice. His work and achievements were ultimately recognised in 2018 by the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Underground Construction Association, and in 2019 by the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Tunnelling Association (ITA).
