IEM agrees to partial WTC2020 refund

13 July 2020

Following its earlier refusal to refund conference expenditure for the now cancelled WTC 2020, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) has finally relented. In a joint statement with the ITA, the IEM pledges to refund 70% of monies already paid by sponsors, exhibitors and registered participants, and a full refund of payments made for side events such as the gala dinner, site visits and other activities.

The ITA itself has agreed to waive its 8.5% share of the event’s income but this forms part of the total 70% to be refunded.

While the agreement must come as a relief for many who may have spent thousands on registration and accommodation for the doomed Kuala Lumpur event, there could be a feeling of disappointment that less than three quarters of the registration fee will be returned. However, those already registered may be heartened to hear that they will have full, free access to the digital WTC2020 which is currently in preparation. Sponsors, exhibitors and registrants will be contacted by the WTC2020 organising committee as soon as details are finalised. The dates of the digital event are confirmed as 11-17 September 2020.
