Wednesday, July 19, 2017 USA - New guide specifications on load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and construction of road tunnels have been published by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
Interceptor project sees TBM acceptance
Friday, June 30, 2017 USA - The TBM for the 1.89km Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel has undergone factory acceptance. The 9.26m Robbins machine, a hybrid EPB / hard rock single shield machine was subsequently shipped the 40km from the factory in Solon, Ohio to the worksite in Akron.
Joy acquisition
Friday, June 30, 2017 USA – Komatsu America Corporation has completed its acquisition of Joy Global a mining machinery company. Retaining its headquarters in Wisconsin, Joy Global was renamed Komatsu Mining Corporation and is now operated as a subsidiary of Komatsu. The ribbon cutting was held in May.
Fort Wayne celebrates ceremonial start to tunnel
Friday, June 16, 2017 USA - The mayor, Tom Henry, and members of the Fort Wayne City Council, along with staff from the Utility Advisory Group, and contractors S.A. Healy Company and Salini Impregilo, among others, attended a ceremony to mark ground breaking for tunnelling on June 15.

Aldea makes Toronto appointment
Wednesday, May 17, 2017 Canada - Aldea Services announced May 12 the appointment of Angel Del Amo Moreno as senior tunnel engineer in its Toronto office. Angel brings nearly 15 years of engineering and tunnel design experience to his new position, having most recently served as the lead designer on the Istanbul Metro in Turkey.

Thursday, May 11, 2017 US - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Richland Operations Office declared an emergency at the Hanford Site at approximately 8:30 a.m. May 9 after a cave-in of a 20ft (6m) section of a tunnel used to store contaminated materials.

SR99 TBM makes breakthrough
Thursday, April 06, 2017 US – A year ago, SR 99 tunnel crews were about to face their biggest challenge: a trip beneath the Alaskan Way Viaduct they were working to replace. On April 4, with the viaduct and more than 9,270ft of new tunnel safely behind them, there was nothing left to face but daylight as the SR 99 TBM broke through near Seattle Center.
Judlau/TC Electric to repair Canarsie Tunnel
Thursday, April 06, 2017 US – The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) board approved an expedited contract on April 3 to a joint venture of Judlau Contracting Inc. and TC Electric to accelerate the rehabilitation of the L train’s Canarsie Tunnel under the East River. The contract award calls for the tunnel work to be completed in 15 months, three months shorter than the previously discussed 18 months.
