New Zealand tunnel work inspires health and safety course

New Zealand – The New Zealand Tunnelling Society (NZTS) recently ran a three-day health and safety course in Auckland in recognition of the significant amount of tunnelling activity currently going on in the city. Two major tunnelling projects, City Rail Link and the Central Interceptor sewer project are in the early stages of construction as well as various small utility tunnel schemes.

International – A new form of contract for tunnelling and underground works has been published. The Emerald Book (more formally: “Conditions of Contract for Underground Works”) was produced by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) and the International Tunnelling Association (ITA). It was launched at the World Tunnel Congress in Naples.

Health and safety code out for public consultation

Great Britain – The British Standards Institute (BSI) has called for public comment on the 2019 update to BS 6164, Code of practice for health and safety in tunnelling and in the construction industry.
