France - The International Tunnelling Association’s annual awards were held last month in Paris. The awards alternate between Europe and a ‘rest of the world’ location, having been held in Singapore and Switzerland over the last two years.

International – Two new documents have been released by ITA Working Groups (WG) this year. ITA WG 6: Maintenance and Repair has released a report on structural fire protection for road tunnels, while ITA WG 17: Long Tunnels at Great Depth has released a report on TBM excavation of long and deep tunnels under difficult rock conditions.

Alun Thomas joins Minova

EMEA - Alun Thomas has moved to Minova, becoming director of the company’s tunnelling activities for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as well as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). He was previously at Danish consultant Ramboll.

Great Britain - A new organisation to consider how we plan, manage and realise underground real estate has been launched in the UK. Think Deep UK (TDUK) is the baby of a group of built environment experts. At a launch event in London in February, cross-disciplinary support was the talking point.

Nigeria launches first international conference

Nigeria – Nigeria has joined the conference circuit with its first event to be held in Lagos on 29 and 30 March. The two-day event, the Tunnelling Association of Nigeria (TAN) Conference 2017 will feature the following speakers:
