First TBM launched under London completes 1000th tunnel ring

The first of eight TBMs, Phyllis, is currently tunnelling under Hyde Park after completing her 1000th tunnel ring and has now constructed 1800m of tunnel from Royal Oak via the Paddington station box, Crossrail announced yesterday.

The 1,000t TBM, Elizabeth, has begun the 8.3km tunnelling journey to create the eastern section of the new rail line between Docklands and central London, Crossrail announced late last week. Elizabeth has now placed the first of 110,000 concrete segments that will line the eastern tunnels.

Work to upgrade utilities in Farringdon progresses

As part of the construction of the new Farringdon station, Crossrail is protecting and replacing the utilities that lie beneath Farringdon Road, the company has announced. The main phase of the utility works commenced yesterday and are expected to continue until May 2013.

Sergio Matias has joined the Normet UK team as the technical manager for underground construction and mining, the company announced late last week. Sergio, who joined in October 2012, is now part of a 10 man team supporting tunnels contractors, mining companies and designers.

The main construction contract for C520 Custom House station has been awarded, it was announced late last week. Crossrail awarded the contract to Laing O¹Rourke Construction. In line with European procurement rules the contract is subject to a 10 day standstill period.

He calls for everyone to become more vocal in his or her support of the industry and in educating others on the importance of underground infrastructure. In a similar vein, the incoming and outgoing chairs of the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) argue the importance of raising tunnelling awareness with politicians and clients. Damian McGirr and Bob Ibell argue that a steady future workload can be achieved by ensuring each city planner has the use of underground space firmly on the agenda. McGirr says the BTS will be central in making this happen.
