Hard lessons at Qinling

Recent breakthrough of the 18.5km Qinling rail tunnel in the remote north west of China marked a significant stage in building one of the longest rail tunnels in the country, where imported TBM technology was used for the first time by local crews on a major scheme. The project has proved instructive for both client and TBM manufacturer, Wirth. Stockholm's Southern Link tunnels

This $800m urban motorway forms part of a planned ring road around Stockholm. The Southern Link will be approximately 6km long, with the major part located in tunnels extending for 4.5km beneath existing buildings. A number of interesting construction techniques are being used, including the first major use of SSE explosives in Sweden, as well as intricate grouting and support operations.
