US - A new water tunnel in New York connecting Brooklyn to Staten Island is now activated following a ceremony October 29. The tunnel saw years of delay following the devastation of Super Storm Sandy in 2012.

USA - A 6.2m-diameter Robbins TBM was launched by the Shea-Kiewit JV on the White River Tunnel project. The 8.5km drive through limestone and dolomitic rock is part of the DigIndy wastewater tunnels complex being constructed below Indianapolis. The parent project comprises 28km of tunnelling.

TBM components arrive in Atlanta for quarry tunnel project

USA—The main beam of a Robbins TBM arrived in Atlanta on June 29 for assembly at the Bellwood Quarry, where a USD 270M project will build a 5-mile- (8km-) long tunnel connecting the Chattahoochee River and flooding the former rock quarry.

TBM manufacturers to merge

INTERNATIONAL - Robbins and Northern Heavy Industries (NHI) agreed to a three-phase merger plan on 28 June. Initially the Shenyang based heavy machinery giant will take a minority interest in Robbins. Following this, probably in July 2016, NHI will take a 61 per cent stake in the American TBM manufacturer.

Intermediate TBM breakthrough on TEP II

MEXCIO – The TBM mining the 5.8km-long Túnel Emisor Poniente (TEP) II project broke through to an intermediate shaft on 29 March. The machine then began maintenance, ongoing as Tunnels and Tunnelling went to press, before continuing to bore the final 3.2km of tunnel.

Women In Tunneling seeks RSVPs for WTC event

Global--During RETC 2015 in New Orleans 16 women met for breakfast and created a contact list. From there, plans for a meeting in 2016 quickly grew with the use of the Women In Tunnelling Linked In group. "It's becoming bigger than what we expected," said organizer Elisa Comis, project engineer with The Robbins Company.

TBM breakthrough on Rosemont tunnel
