Stockholm's Southern Link tunnels

This $800m urban motorway forms part of a planned ring road around Stockholm. The Southern Link will be approximately 6km long, with the major part located in tunnels extending for 4.5km beneath existing buildings. A number of interesting construction techniques are being used, including the first major use of SSE explosives in Sweden, as well as intricate grouting and support operations. Construction Journalist Martin Hunt reports.

The world's longest road tunnel

September sees the breakthrough of what is claimed to be the world's longest road tunnel, the 24.5km Laerdal Tunnel in western Norway, which has put to good use the hard rock tunnelling expertise for which the Norwegians are famous. Editor Steve McCormack visited the site, where innovative ventilation and the use of large scale mucking plant has contributed to the success of this mammoth project.
