Greek Young Members emerge with Athens Career Day

GREECE - The first activity of the Young Members Group of the Greek Tunnelling Society (YMG-GTS) enjoyed an enthusiastic industry reception. The ‘Career Day for Tunnel and Geotechnical Professionals’ was held on 28 September during the 2nd Eastern European Tunnelling Conference in Athens, Greece and its attendance of 80 professionals exceeded expectations.

Young members matter

In the last 15 months there has been a flourish of countries establishing Young Member Groups in tunnelling organisations, and that includes both Canada and the US. In May the ITA General Assembly in Brazil approved the creation of an ITA Young Members Group. Its mission is to “bridge the generation gap and provide a technical network platform for young professionals in the tunnelling and underground space industry."

ITA Working Group Five suspends future activities

The ITA Working Group on Health and Safety in Works (WG5) has been forced to temporarily suspend future activities due to poor attendance. Speaking at the ITA General Assembly in Brazil last month, group animateur Donald Lamont also warned that the level of scrutiny afforded the current documents up for review was not as great as he had hoped, and could result into a delay of up to a year for the work programme.

Turkish mine disaster and Rio sinkhole shadow WTC 2014

Two disasters shook the World Tunnel Congress in Sao Paulo, Brazil last week. A sinkhole appeared on the Rio de Janeiro Metro Project, while in Europe, more than 300 coal miners were killed in an explosion and fire in western Turkey. A minute of silence was held prior to the second session of the ITA General Assembly on 14 May. The catastrophe was felt keenly, given the 2014 Congress’s major focus on future tunnelling opportunities in the mining sector.

ITA turns 40

The International Tunnelling Association's 40th birthday is no exception and when routing through the early editions of Tunnels we happened across an interview with Alan Muir Wood ahead of the first ITA meeting in Oslo, 1974.
