The tunnelling industry is continuing its buoyant period. Thames Tideway tunnelling completed, and secondary lining, connection and testing works will be complete in 2025. HS2 tunnelling well progressing, Hinkley Point C, York Potash in the UK are also progressing, and numerous smaller TBM tunnels around the country for Road & Rail crossings. The Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) has opened.

ITA leadership elections

Prof Arnold Dix has been elected President of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES). He plans to catalyse initiatives in measurement tools and contracts to help the tunnelling industry move forward on sustainability. The election took place at the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in Copenhagen in early September.

Update on BTS/ICE specification 4th edition

At the end of the first day of the BTS Conference today there will be a BTS evening meeting at 6pm with a presentation entitled “The BTS/ICE specification 4th edition. Collaborating for sustainability”, by Christoph Eberle, Chair of the BTS Technical Committee, and Technical Principal at Mott MacDonald.

Chris Barrett, a 32-year-old civil engineer working with BAM Nuttall in London, has won the British Tunnelling Society’s Harding Prize 2022. The announcement was made at the BTS Annual Dinner on 6 May where Barrett received his award.
