Recent breakthrough of the 18.5km Qinling rail tunnel in the remote north west of China marked a significant stage in building one of the longest rail tunnels in the country, where imported TBM technology was used for the first time by local crews on a major scheme. The project has proved instructive for both client and TBM manufacturer, Wirth.
