TBM breaks through on Lonato tunnel

Excavation has been completed on the Lonato del Garda tunnel on Italy’s Brescia-Verona high-speed railway.

Pini Group reports on LinkedIn that the 10m diameter EPBM Martina broke through on Wednesday, completing the second of two single-track tubes.

Challenges included tunnelling through the Garda Morainic Amphitheatre, comprising glacial and fluvio-glacial deposits and aquifers, and under the A4 Milan-Venice motorway where the overburden was low.

The new 48km line, being built for Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, crosses the regions of Lombardy and Veneto. The project includes two other major tunnels – the Calcinato II and San Giorgio in Salici. They will be excavated by conventional method, including cut and cover sections.
