WTC2024 Shenzhen Awaits Delegates From the world over

Dear underground infrastructure professional,

As underground infrastructure professionals, we, the Organising Committee of the Tunnel & Underground Works Branch of China Civil Engineering Society, would like to invite you to the World Tunnel Congress of 2024 to convene this year in Shenzhen, China, from Friday 19 to Thursday 25 April.

Under the theme, Tunnelling for a Better Life, 486 papers out of 792 accepted international contributions have been selected for presentation across five simultaneous Technical Sessions and poster sessions during the three conference days of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 22, 23, 24 April.

Discussion topics will include innovations; state of the art excavation methods; developments in lining, ground support and water control technologies; solutions for working in extreme and challenging conditions.

As host of the event, China has several extraordinary markers in the world of underground infrastructure design and construction. Since hosting the 16th WTC in 1990 in Chengdu 34 years ago, China has increased its underground alignments for roads from 130km to 26,784km (a growth of 206 times); railways from 2,359km to 21,978km (a 9.3 times increase); and underground metro lines from 54km to 8,006km in more than 50 cities (an increase of 148 times). China is home to more of the world’s largest TBM projects at up to 17.5m in diameter; it has taken immersed tube design and construction to extraordinary dimension; and completes more conventional and drill+blast excavation per year than any other country, and many of them combined.

All this experience and knowledge will be shared in Shenzhen with the international underground construction community benefitting from the open discourse, professional networking, lessons learned and technical advancements.
