Turin TBM passes FAT

26 March 2024

The 4m-diameter slurry TBM that will dig the Turin Median Collector has passed its Factory Acceptance Test.

The Turin median collector, nicknamed the “Hydropolitan”, will be the new backbone of the Turin sewage network. The new 14km-long tunnel will run at a depth of 20m under Turin, connecting the southern part of the city with the north-west area of Turin, carrying wastewater to the SMAT Water Reclamation Centre in Castiglione Torinese.

This new infrastructure will help to deal with problems associated with climate change, such as the significant increase in mixed wastewater discharges that the old collector is no longer able to handle. It will also enable special maintenance of the existing system.

During the construction works, remediation operations will be carried out because of the presence of unexploded military ordinance from the second world war.

In 2019, the Metropolitan Water Company of Turin (SMAT) awarded the design and build contract to a Ghella / Itinera joint venture.
