Three JVs picked for BART extension

Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has chosen three joint ventures (JV) to submit proposals for the estimated US$2bn track and tunnel work contract for the BART Silicon Valley Extension into Downtown San Jose and Santa Clara, California, US. The teams are:

  • BART Silicon Valley Phase II Tunnel Partners (B2TP) comprising Acciona, FCC Construcción and Lane Construction, supported by Hatch and COWI.
  • Bay Valley Connect (Civil & Building North America (US subsidiary of BouyguesTP) comprising Vinci Construction and Barnard Construction, supported by Parsons.
  • Kiewit/Shea/Traylor comprising Kiewit Infrastructure West Co, JF Shea Construction and Traylor Brothers, supported by Kiewit Engineering Group and Arup.

The successful team will design and construct the 8km long, 13.1m-ID tunnel to station adit connections, as well as ventilation and emergency egress facilities, plus support-of-excavation substructures for three underground stations.

The other three contract packages which will be delivered via design-build include the contract for the build-out of three underground stations with above-ground entrances and ticketing; the systems contract; and the above-ground station and rail yard.

The six-mile, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport) Phase II Extension Project will extend southwest from the recently opened Berryessa/North San José Station, with three more underground stations in San Jose and one above-grade station in Santa Clara. Five miles of the alignment will be underground.

Construction is planned to begin in 2022, with substantial construction completed by 2028.
