Strabag scoops Toronto tunnel

The Regional Municipality of York has awarded a CAD 290M (USD 296M) contract to Strabag to build a 15km wastewater tunnel in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada.

Strabag will be responsible for the tunnel, its 16 shafts and various bio-filters to clean the air and remove odours, as well as the upgrade of a nearby 3km stretch of road. Tunnelling will be performed using four TBMs made by Caterpillar Tunnelling Canada Corporation with a diameter of 3.6m, provided by the client.

The project follows Strabag’s spring breakthrough of the 10km tunnel beneath Niagara Falls in Ontario.

Strabag CEO Hans Peter Haselsteiner said, “We have spent nearly five years working on a water tunnel at Niagara Falls with the world’s largest hard rock tunnel boring machine. Now, following completion of the tunnelling works, we can turn to new projects and challenges. I am pleased for our employees who have settled into their new lives in Canada and can now remain there.”

Construction will start this month and is expected to finish in August 2015.
