Spanish rail line goes underground

16 October 2023

Spain’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda has awarded a Comsa, FCC and Ferrovial consortium the contract to take one of Barcelona’s rail lines underground.

The existing R2 Rodalies line, which runs 130km north to south, will go underground as it passes through the Montcada i Reixac municipality, on the northern side of Barcelona. The €540.4m (£468m) contract also includes the construction of a new station.

The consortium will build a 4km tunnel, which will accommodate a third track to increase the system’s capacity. The new underground station will have platforms to serve two tracks, while the central track will be used by regional trains that will not stop at the station.

The news underground section will be at depths of up to 35m.
