Queensland tunnel design contract awarded

23 January 2013

Jacobs Associates is providing tunnel design to Thiess Tunnelling on the Narrows Marine Crossing Project, a 4.4km long tunnel that will be constructed under a body of water known as 'The Narrows', the company stated earlier this month. The tunnel will house the Santos GLNG gas transmission pipeline and is expected to begin early this year.

Thiess Tunnelling was awarded a AUD 134M (USD 141M) contract by Saipem Australia, the national arm of worldwide pipeline specialist Saipem, to construct the tunnel for the Santos GLNG project in Gladstone, Queensland. Thiess purchased one of the EPB tunnel boring machines used to construct the Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) in Melbourne, which was completed last year, and plans to use the refurbished machine to construct the Narrows Crossing.
