Mossia ANS completes excavation of Moss railway tunnels

25 October 2023

The Mossia ANS consortium has completed the excavation of the Moss tunnel, one of two tunnels on the Sandbukta-Moss-SÃ¥stad railway line in Norway.

The Calberg Tunnel was completed in November 2022.

To build the two tunnels the Acciona/Implenia consortium carried out 1,560 blasts and removed 2.5 million tons of rock. Blasting for the Moss Tunnel started in November 2019.

The Moss Tunnel will now be completed with shotcrete, the installation of waterproofing and anti-freeze membranes, the concreting of the final lining, and the construction of trenches, drainage and foundations. In addition, a substructure will be constructed for the rail installation.

Mossia is due to complete works in 2025.

Mossia is responsible for building 9km of the 10km project for Norway’s transport agency, Bane NOR.

The project, aimed at increasing capacity and reducing travel time on the Østfold line, will provide a new double-track railway through the municipality of Moss in southern Norway. It is part of Bane NOR’s Intercity programme to improve connections between Norway’s major cities and ease traffic congestion around Oslo.
