Metal snag halts tunnel rescue

24 November 2023

The rescue of the 41 men trapped in a part collapsed tunnel in India has halted after the auger hit metal objects.

Posting on LinkedIn, ITA president Arnold Dix, who is at the site in Uttarakhand, said twisted steal, a jumbo and other equipment were buried in the collapse material and there was a “huge cavity” above the collapse zone.

He said, however: “We have many strategies for the men’s safe return – the co-ordination between agencies and military [is] astounding”.

The men have been trapped for nearly two weeks in the under-construction Silkyara Bend-Barkot Tunnel in the Hmalayan region after a part collapse occurred on November 12.

The 4.5km tunnel is being developed for National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) to link four important Hindu pilgrimage sites with a two-lane road.
