Implenia wins North Bothnia Line tunnel contract

4 March 2024

The Swedish Transport Authority has awarded Implenia the contract for planning and building the Ersmark tunnel in northern Sweden.

The project comprises a 1.6km-long tunnel between Fäboberget and Ersmarksberget on the North Bothnia rail line, as well as a service tunnel, various concrete structures, water and wastewater systems and drainage mats. Access roads and staging areas are also being built. Work will begin in May and will take about two years to complete.

The North Bothnia Line is a 270km new freight and passenger railway between Umeå and Luleå that will enable faster, safer and more sustainable transport. It will serve as an extension of the existing Bothnia high-speed railway line which opened in 2010.

The North Bothnia Line and the entire Bothnian corridor is included in the core network corridor Scandinavian-Mediterranean, or ScanMed. Construction commenced in 2018 and the line is expected to be completed in 2030.
