Final shaft slab poured on Tideway
13 July 2021Tideway has announced that the final concrete base slab has been poured and set in the deepest shaft of London’s super-sewer project.
Following excavation last month of the 64m-deep shaft at the King Edward Memorial Park site in Wapping, around 780m3 of concrete was poured in a continuous operation that took nearly 18 hours.
The feat constitutes a major milestone for the project. The team at Tideway’s easternmost riverside site will now look to construct the shaft’s secondary lining, as well as walls for the interception chamber. The work at this stretch of the project will prevent the North East Storm Relief Sewer discharging hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sewage into the River Thames every year. Next year, the team will dig a connection tunnel from the shaft to the super sewer.
It has been estimated that combined sewer overflows during wet weather events result in up to 39 million tonnes of sewage flowing into the Thames every year. Tideway is designed to intercept these and so help maintain a cleaner river.
