The Metropolitan St Louis Sewer District has awarded a contract to Parsons Brinckerhoff, as a subconsultant to Shannon & Wilson, Inc., for construction management services for the Lower and Middle River Des Peres tunnel programme, the company announced earlier this month.

The USD 796M programme includes construction projects for a force main tunnel and two deep sewer tunnels, along with associated diversion/intake structures and drop-shafts. The Lemay force main project, the first project under construction as part of the project, includes installation of 3,600ft (1,098m) of 96in (2,438mm) diameter tunnel with connections to existing facilities and a new drop shaft.

The north and south lower and middle tunnel projects, one of two deep sewer projects to be constructed, include a deep storage tunnel under the River Des Peres with a length of nine miles (14km), a diameter of 28ft (8.5m), and storage capacity of 260 million gallons. The Jefferson Barracks tunnel, a second deep tunnel project to be constructed, includes installation of a 72in (1,829mm) diameter pipe tunnel approximately 3.5 miles (5.6km) long.

As a partner on the construction management team, Parsons Brinckerhoff will provide pre-construction services consisting of tunnel and shaft design review, cost estimating, constructability review, scheduling, safety, and risk analysis. During construction, the firm will provide resident engineers and inspectors.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2013, with completion slated for 2030.
