Christopher Hewett wins BTS Harding Prize

The British Tunnelling Society has announced Christopher Hewett as the winner of the 2024 Harding Prize.

The prize was awarded at the BTS’s meeting last night from a shortlist of three finalists. They each presented their papers to the meeting and fielded questions from the audience. The winning paper was selected by a judging panel.

Christopher Hewett’s presentation – The construction of large diameter shafts within challenging ground conditions – detailed dewatering, ground condition and monitoring challenges that had to be overcome via technical innovations, a collaborative approach, and an overall positive mindset.

Hewett is currently the delivery manager for ground water management and shaft construction for Costain Group (Skanska Costain Strabag Joint Venture) on HS2. He was previously section engineer on the project.

The other two finalists were David Maddison, who presented on The design and construction of complex offshore structures. The Hinkley C tunnel to shaft connections; and Sam Huckle on Tunnel d’Yvoir – When tunnelling becomes a passion project
