Cambridge establishes net zero infrastructure centre
20 March 2024The University of Cambridge Civil Engineering Division has been successful in its bid to create a doctoral centre for net zero infrastructure.
The university has secured EPSRC funding to establish the Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero. It will focus on meeting the user needs of the infrastructure sector in its pursuit of net zero by 2050.
The £8.1m funding from the EPSRC is supported by £1.3m funding from the university and more than £2.5m from industry, as well as more than £8.9m of in-kind contributions.

hyperTunnel is one of 30 industry partners working in collaboration with the university, providing industrial placements and training.
More than 70 fully-funded studentships will be made available over the next five years. Recruitment is under way for the first cohort who will start in October this year.
The aim is to develop the next generation of doctoral graduates who will be equipped to lead the design and implementation of the net zero infrastructure agenda in the UK.
The centre will develop a roadmap around four themes to provide an umbrella for its activities. The themes are: current and disruptive/new technologies; radical circularity and whole life approach; AI-driven digitalisation and data; and risk-based systems thinking and connectivity.
