5 May 2023

Canada and Hochtief subsidiary Flatiron Constructors Canada, has been selected as the development partner to deliver Phase One of Calgary’s Green Line LRT project.

The C$5.5bn (US$4.07bn) Green Line project is the largest infrastructure undertaking in the Canadian city’s history. This first phase will connect south-east Calgary to the downtown and into the existing LRT and MAX BRT routes. It will include 18km of dual light rail track, 13 passenger stations, 2km of tunnelling, nine major bridge structures including 1km of elevated guideway, and a 72-acre maintenance and storage facility. Construction is expected to begin in 2024.

Under the 16-month development phase contract Calgary’s Green Line team and BTC will develop the project design and agree project costs, risk balance, and overall construction schedule before executing a separate project agreement to construct the project. As part of negotiations, Green Line agreed to extend the development phase from approximately 12 months to 16 months to allow for greater design progression and cost certainty.
