Virginia tunnel project set to begin

SKW Constructors has announced it will hire as many as 100 direct employees at its Sparrows Point Shipyard and Industrial Park site as construction begins on huge reinforced concrete tubes and fans for tunnels in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

The company will also hire subcontractors that will hire additional carpenters, concrete finishers, mechanics, structural and reinforcing iron workers, surveyors, truck drivers and laborers. SKW Constructors, a joint venture of Skanska, Kiewit and Weeks, has already awarded subcontracts to 57 Baltimore metro area companies valued at nearly USD 5M.

Sal Taddeo, executive vice president of Skanska, added: "Sparrows Point is an ideal location for the manufacturing of materials for our Elizabeth River Tunnels project. We are looking forward to becoming part of a community with great talent and heart."

"This project is a huge boost in our efforts to bring new businesses and new jobs back to Sparrows Point. SKW has found a perfect location for heavy industrial construction and the timing couldn't be better for former steelworkers looking for new jobs that match their skills," said Kevin Kamenetz, Baltimore County executive.

Dominick Murray, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development secretary, said: "This is great news for Maryland and for Baltimore County. We look forward to working with SKW and our partners in Baltimore County to help match the many dedicated Sparrows Point workers with new jobs and opportunities."
