Triple tunnel

3 September 2003

A major road tunnel project has been proposed in southern California to alleviate congestion, particularly in Orange County.

The estimated US$3bn-US$3.5bn TriTunnel Express project will comprise a triple-bored tunnel, with each tube approximately 14m in diameter. It will pass under the Santa Ana mountains and, in addition to the road, carry a light rail system, water, and utilities such as oil and communication lines.

Although only in conceptual stage, the project has been warmly received by many organisations and businesses who argue that the congested road network in this part of California is damaging the local economy.
