The 14th Australasian Tunnelling Coneference

1 February 2011

The 14th Australasian Tunnelling Conference will be hosted in Auckland, New Zealand this year, starting on 6 March at the Skycity Auckland Convention Centre.

The technical program will run from 8-10 March and will cover the general theme: ‘Development in Underground Space’. The conference coordinators said that it will shed light on developments in tunnelling methods and equipment in the past decade as well as providing an insight into recent experiences.

An extensive array of topics will be covered in this conference that organisers said they hope will mark a meaningful start to the second decade of the 21st Century.

The keynote presentations at the start of each day will be: ‘Open Issues in Tunnel Boring Machine Excavation of Deep Tunnels’ by Professor Giovanni Barla of the Turin Polytechnic University on 8 March, ‘Fire Suppression Systems – Protection for People, Concrete or Profits’ by Professor Arnold Dix of the International Tunnelling Insurance Group on 9 March and ‘Xpress Rail Link – Challenges of Tunnelling through Hong Kong and into Mainland China by Alan Morris, XRL Tunnels project manager for MRT.

The conference will be co-hosted by the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusImm), the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand (Ipenz) and Engineers Australia.
