LTA awards contract for Cross Island Line Phase 1

11 March 2021

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the joint venture of Taisei Corporation and China State Construction Engineering Corp with the contract to design and construct a tunnel for Phase 1 of the Cross Island Line (CRL).

The S$356m (US$266m) contract involves a 3.2km bored tunnel between Aviation Park and Loyang stations. LTA will – for the first time – use a large-diameter tunnel boring machine to construct a single tunnel with twin tracks.

CRL Phase 1 will be 29km long and comprise 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. Work is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2021.

As Singapore’s eighth MRT line, the 50km CRL will be the country’s longest, fully underground line and will be constructed in three phases. Almost half of its stations will interchange with other train lines. When fully completed, CRL will link major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region.
