Lake Mead death under investigation

14 June 2012

State safety workers in Nevada are investigating a construction accident that killed one worker and injured another in the third intake at Lake Mead at around 4.30pm on Monday 11 June.

The accident happened near the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Thomas Albert Turner, 44, of Henderson was killed and another worker injured when they were hit by exploding grout material after some material became loose, officials for the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration have refused to comment on the incident since it is an open investigation. It is unclear when construction might resume.

Intake Number Three has been beset by delays and increased costs since construction began in 2009. In 2010, the team excavating the starter tunnel for the TBM hit a fault zone, causing water and debris to flood the work area. The area flooded twice more that year.
