Implenia wins second Fornebu Line contract

Project K2D Skøyen-Vækerø comprises around 1.2km of tunnelling, an escape tunnel and construction of the Skøyen subway station. The contract is valued at €117m (US$124m).

Implenia will start work on this section of the new metro line later this year, and the project is scheduled to be completed in 2025.

Implenia is already building the first part of the Fornebu Line, the 2.3km-long K2A Fornebu-Lysaker, which is due to be completed at the end of this year.

“This is a huge win for Implenia and our Norwegian team, building on our experience in successfully managing large and complex infrastructure projects in Norway,” said Erwin Scherer, global head of tunnelling at Implenia.

In the tender project, Oslo City Government placed emphasis on environmental protection and sustainability.

“Sustainability is one of Implenia’s five corporate values and is becoming increasingly important also for infrastructure projects,” said Scherer.

The 8km Fornebu Line is the largest transport project in Oslo for 20 years, and the largest subway tunnelling project in Norway for 50 years. It will connect the centre of Fornebu peninsula to the Norwegian capital at Majorstuen, with six new stations: Skøyen, Vækerø, Lysaker, Telenor Arena, Flytårnet and Fornebu Senter. It will join the existing network at Majorstuen.

Oslo City Government says the project is complex and extensive with large rock caverns, long tunnels, deep construction pits, shafts, structures and comprehensive technical installations. The line passes through challenging geology with folding structures, faults, deep gouges, clay and low rock cover.

Cowi, in joint venture with Multiconsult, is designing the line. In April last year Norwegian construction and civil engineering firm Veidekke was appointed to build the Lysaker to Vækerø tunnel.
