Eindhoven station contract awarded

10 October 2012

ProRail has awarded a contract for the construction of the new station tunnel in Eindhoven, Netherlands, worth EUR 32M (USD 41M). Heijmans won the contract in a European tendering process, the company revealed yesterday.

Preparatory work will begin immediately, realisation starts early next year and the entire work will be completed by the summer of 2016, Heijmans announced. The construction of rail and technical building installations are part of the job.

The Eindhoven railway station will be renovated since the current station was not designed to accommodate future traveller volumes. In addition to the current 8m wide tunnel, an additional new 35m wide tunnel will be constructed. The tunnel will also form a pedestrian link between the northern and southern sections of the city. Projections call for 115,000 passers-by to make use of the tunnel each day by 2020.

Heijmans stated that a key component of the renovation is the improved access to the station for disabled persons. The new underground passage will be equipped with lifts and escalators to all platforms so that people with impaired mobility, for example, can independently travel by train.
