Consultation launched for new Thames Cable Tunnel

National Grid has launched a public consultation on its plans to build a new cable tunnel between Kent and Essex.

The Grain to Tilbury project will replace the existing 50-year-old Thames Cable Tunnel which links Tilbury and Gravesend. Headhouses will be built at each end of the new tunnel.

Both the new cable tunnel underneath the River Thames and the headhouses will require planning permission from Thurrock and Gravesham Councils.

The Grain to Tilbury tunnel is part of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations.

It is also part of the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment programme to connect 50GW of offshore wind by 2030.

“The Grain to Tilbury project is essential to upgrade the energy network in Kent and Essex to ensure that we can continue to carry more clean energy to homes and businesses, and help the country reach net zero by 2050,” said lead project manager Bryan Truscott.
