Acciona breaks through on Norwegian road tunnel

11 March 2022

Acciona has broken through on the new tube of the Vaere tunnel in Norway.

The tunnel is one of four being constructed on the E6 Ranheim-Værnes highway. The 23km route includes approximately 8.3km of twin-tube tunnels, with the Vaere tunnel 1.7km long and the other three 0.9km, 1.8km and 3.9km.

The highway project largely follows the old, two-lane road, but the tunnels run parallel to the existing ones.

The new infrastructure aims to improve connectivity in the northern part of Trøndelag County in central Norway.

Acciona, which was awarded the NOK4.3bn (US$340m) design and build contract by the Norwegian state highway authority Nye Veier, began work on the project in 2020. The new road is expected to open in 2023/2024.
