When completed in spring 2003 the Rennsteig tunnel, at 7.9km, will be the longest highway tunnel in Germany. The twin tube tunnel is the most expensive element of the new A71/A73 highway, connecting Erfurt with Schweinfurt and included crossing the 112 year old Brandleite railway tunnel with only 6m of cover.
