The world's first steel lined rock cavern for the storage of natural gas is under construction just north of Halmstad in south west Sweden. The facility will demonstrate a new Swedish technique known as Lined Rock Cavern (LRC), by which gas is stored in a lined cavern at high pressure, the rock being used to absorb the pressure. The domed roof of the cavern, and the precision specified, call for the use of advanced construction techniques.
