A ventilation system that cannot cope with increasing traffic will render the tunnel unusable. P J Bullock, VKE Engineers, and D J Gray, South African National Roads Agency, describe the research initiated when it was confirmed that the natural airflow in the Huguenot Tunnel, combined with the increase in pollutants, affected the performance of the ventilation system. They are now implement-ing a new ventilation control strategy which takes into account external weather conditions.
