Tunnels facilitate first UK curved jacked-box structure

On 1 August 2020, UK-based Morgan Sindall broke through on the second of two tunnels on Network Rail's Werrington Grade Separation project. Advancing around 7m/day, a Lovat RM132 3.5m-diameter EPB machine has excavated two guide tunnels that form part of an ambitious civil engineering project that will see installation of the UK’s first-ever curved jacked-box structure.

Breakthrough on Thames Tideway West

Great Britain – The first breakthrough on the Thames Tideway project took place last week at King George’s Park in Wandsworth. A 3m diameter Lovat EPBM, Charlotte, is digging the 1.1km Frogmore Connection Tunnel from Wandsworth to Fulham. The breakthrough marked completion of the 500m southern section of the tunnel and the TBM will now be lifted from the shaft, taken back to Dormay Street and placed back into the ground to tunnel 600m north to Fulham.

Caterpillar Tunneling Canada Corporation (CTCC) revealed last night that it will exit the tunnelling business and cease all production by mid 2014. The company was created following Caterpillar’s purchase of Lovat in 2008. Caterpillar said the enterprise no longer represented a “strategic growth opportunity”.
