Ceneri west tube breakthrough

SWITZERLAND – After one final blast, at exactly 12:00 on 17 March, the miners in the Ceneri Base Tunnel could shake hands. Thirteen months ahead of schedule, the first breakthrough to the south took place in the west tube of the Ceneri Base Tunnel. The final breakthrough to the north is planned for the beginning of 2016. The Ceneri Base Tunnel will become operational at the end of 2019.

Gotthard Base Tunnel test trains launched

Swiss transport minister Doris Leuthard launched the first official test train into the 57km Gotthard Base Tunnel on 16 December, AlpTransit announced recently. The train travelled over the approximately 13km-long pilot section from Bodio to Faido at a speed of 160 km per hour.

The concept of applying fire protection to a tunnel lining is gaining acceptance even though projects in which it has been used are not yet in great numbers. Successful recent use of BASF Meyco’s Fireshield 1350 material on the massive Gotthard base rail tunnel seems destined to increase confidence in the method however.
