Work starts on Hong Kong rail extension

6 June 2023

Main construction works have started on Hong Kong’s Tung Chung Line extension.

The new 2.5km rail line includes a 1.3km tunnel and two new stations – Tung Chung East and Tung Chung West.

The Bouygues-Dragages Joint Venture has the major civil works contract for Tung Chung West Station and the tunnel connecting the station to Tung Chung Station.

The contract for Tung Chung East Station and associated enabling works for track diversions will be carried out by Paul Y-CRCC Joint Venture.

The rail extension will support the Tung Chung new town expansion at the Tung Chung East reclamation area and Tung Chung West. It will link the entire railway and public transportation network of North Lantau.

The MTR Corporation’s Tung Chung Line Extension is the first of several new railway projects aimed at sustainable long-term development in Hong Kong.

Construction of other new railway projects including the Tuen Mun South Extension, Kwu Tung Station on the East Rail Line, and Oyster Bay Station is planned to commence later this year. The statutory processes or advance works for the Northern Link Main Line, Hung Shui Kiu Station and Airport Railway Extended Overrun Tunnel are also under way.
