20 May 2022

Rio Grande Pacific Corporation has awarded the final engineering and construction contracts for the Uinta Basin Railway in Utah.

Obayashi Corporation will deliver the final design and construction of the railway’s tunnels. The 136km (85-mile) route includes five tunnels, with the longest being 4.8km (3 miles).

AECOM will deliver final design of the railway, while Skanska-WW Clyde Joint Venture will build the railway, excluding the tunnels.

The project will provide the first common-carrier railway for north-eastern Utah’s Uinta Basin. It will serve mineral, energy, agricultural, construction, and manufacturing industries in the region.

Initiated by the Seven County Infrastructure Coalition in 2018, it is the largest new railway construction project in the US since the 1970s. The Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation is an equity partner in the railway.
