Two Terratec EPBMs have started boring the first underground tunnelling package for Corridor-1 of the Kanpur MRTS Project in India.

The 6.52m diameter machines will excavate the 8.62km tunnel on Orange Line-1, connecting IIT Kanpur to Naubasta. The remaining 15.16km of the 23.8km section is elevated.

The two EPBMs have been launched for the initial drives from Bada Chauraha station to Naya Ganj station.

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation awarded the contract to Gulermak-Sam India JV in September 2020. The works also include the construction of four new underground stations at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj, each 215m long.

For the geology consisting of soil, clay, silt and sandy silt, the JV selected the two EPBMs equipped with a spoke-type cutterhead with 57% opening ratios.
