TBM breaks through on Delhi-Meerut rail line

25 October 2022

The first breakthrough has been made on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor of India’s new Rapid Regional Transport System.

The TBM, Sudarshan 8.3, broke through at Begumpul RRTS station in Meerut on October 22 after constructing a 750m tunnel between Ghandi Park and Begumpul stations. Excavation took four months.

The TBM will now be retrieved and taken back to Ghandi Park to start work on a parallel tunnel.

Two other TBMs – Sudarshan 8.1 and 8.2 – are boring 1.8km-long parallel tunnels from Bhaisall to Football Chowk.

The 82km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS will provide a high-speed, high-capacity commuter service. It will have 25 stations, including two depots and one stabling yard and it is due to be completed in 2025.
