Strabag bags 36,000 concrete-segment contract from HS2

12 October 2021

Austria-based construction firm Strabag has a won a contract to supply around 36,000 precast concrete segments weighing up to 10t each for the London tunnels of HS2.

Segment production will take place in a new, ‘state-of-the-art’ production facility to be built and operated by Strabag UK in Hartlepool, northern England. Located on a leased industrial site at Hartlepool Docks, the factory, storage and transport facility project has been commissioned by Skanska Costain Strabag JV (SCS JV). Construction work on the plant is scheduled to start in January 2022 and is expected to go into operation by the end of the year.

First deliveries of segments – expected for Spring 2023 – will be to the eastern section of the 5.6km-long, twin-tube Northolt tunnel between Green Park Way Ventilation Shaft and Victoria Road Ancillary Shaft, London.

Hartlepool was a chosen production location due to its excellent links to both the rail network and port facilities. Strabag also has an existing precast factory not far away at the Woodsmith Mine project, enabling early knowledge transfer to the new team at Hartlepool even before production begins. In addition, the required aggregates for production can be delivered easily. And segments can be transported by rail in an environmentally-friendly manner to the new HS2 logistics terminal near Willesden Junction, London.
