Herrenknecht holds vocational training day
Germany – Herrenknecht hosted its third career open day earlier this month. The TBM manufacturer set up 15 stations to show each apprenticeship task within the company. Some 300 young people, plus parents, visited Schwanau for the event.

Rokycany-Pilsen line completes
Czech Republic – Twin 9.89m-diameter 4.15km-long tunnels were successfully mined by a Herrenknecht multi-mode TBM (EPB to open single shield). Breakthrough took place in October 2017 and the tunnels form part of the Rokycany-Pilsen rail line.

Heritage organisation attacks Stonehenge Tunnel proposal
Great Britain – The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has sent a letter to the UK’s Highways Agency objecting to the proposed Stonehenge Tunnel. The condemnation comes after the Highways Agency wrapped up its formal consultation for the 2.9km tunnel near the famous monument.

First female Harding Prize winner
Great Britain – After 32 years the Harding prize has been awarded to a female young tunneller. “I am also proud to be the first woman to win since 1986, which is actually the year I was born,” said Leah Jacobs, who works for London Bridge Associates. Jacobs won the competition bringing her paper on “Changing the safety Culture” based on her contribution to the Waterview Connection project in New Zealand.

Verloop to lead ITACUS Young Talent Program
The Netherlands – Rosanne Verloop has been chosen lead the new ITA Committee for Underground Space (ITACUS) Young Talent Program. The announcement is due to be made on 24 April by ITACUS executives Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro.

Breakthrough on Dudullu-Bostanci
Turkey – The first of four TBMs boring the Dudullu-Bostanci metro line in Istanbul broke through in early March. Contractor Senbay Madencilik-Kolin-Kalyon JV used a 6.56m Terratec EPBM, equipped with 17” disc cutters, to complete the 3.98km-long bore. The teams ended on a high, forming 19 rings in a single final shift, which translates to 26.6m of excavation in 12 hours.

BTS Tunnel Design and Construction Course 2018
Great Britain – The British Tunnelling Society’s annual design and construction course is set to return to the University of Warwick this July. Held in the first week of the month, the course aims to cover all the major aspects of an underground project’s life and will contain worked examples and workshop sessions to allow improved interaction between delegates and speakers. It is aimed at the wide range of professional services that support the tunnelling industry, including clients, tunnel operators and members of the financial and insurance sectors that may have a vested interest in tunnelling enterprises, as well as young tunnel design and construction on engineers.

Dr Sauer management changes
Great Britain/Canada – Brian Lyons will be taking over from Gerald Skalla as MD of Dr Sauer & Partners in London, UK. Skalla will be strategic director for the UK, but will focus on the Canadian market and will build up a company office in Toronto, in response to a growing infrastructure market.

Arup appoints new global rail leader
UK - Arup has appointed Tai Chong Chew as global rail leader to direct the firm’s global rail business. Chew will work closely with interim leader, Anna Squire to establish Arup’s rail business as the world leader in the sector.

Great Britain - Following the total collapse of one of Britain’s largest contractors, Carillion, Kier and Eiffage have picked up its HS2 work. The companies, which were in joint venture with Carillion to deliver GBP 1.4bn of projects in the HS2 programme, confirm that they are offering employment to the 51 Carillion employees including apprentices, currently working on the HS2 joint venture.

Mammoet delivers first Tideway TBM
Great Britain - Mammoet has delivered the first TBM to the Thames Tideway Tunnel project in Central London. The machine was delivered to the 7km west section of the project. It is now in the hands of the contractor, a JV of Bam Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty.

Germany - December’s Stuva conference hosted the launch event for the Stuva Forum for Young Engineering Professionals (Stuva YEP). Approximately 150 young engineers attended the launch event and currently the organisation is loose, with updates and announcements being distributed by email.

Fugro bags E39 geotechnical contract
Norway – Geotechnical investigation company Fugro has been awarded a year-long contract to carry out seabed investigations at four fjord locations in Norway. The work will inform foundation designs for the bridge and tunnel sections of the major E39 Coastal Highway project.

Minova secures cold weather approval for Tekflex DS-W
Norway - Minova has received approval for the specification and application of Tekflex DS‐W in Bane Nor tunnel projects. Bane Nor is the approving authority for waterproofing materials for any railway or road project in Norway so their approval is required before a spray applied waterproofing membrane is used on said projects.
