Global interest in Sydney Rail Link

14 August 2012

There has been strong Australian and international interest in the AUD 7bn (USD 7.3bn) contract for Australia's longest and deepest tunnel, Sydney's North West Rail Link, the government in New South Wales announced today.

Six consortiums, made up of more than 60 companies, have signalled their intention to bid for the contract to build the twin 15.5km tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping, following calls for expressions of interest.

³This is an outstanding result and a strong sign of the high level of interest in this project,² Gladys Berejiklian, transport minister, said. ³The companies involved are from across Australia and around the world, including Spain, the USA, France, the UK, South Africa, China, Italy and Japan."

The government is expected to officially call for tenders in October, with a contract to be awarded in the second half of 2013. TBMs are expected to be in the ground in 2014.

Contracts will also be awarded for surface construction and rail systems, trains and operations. The tender process for those contracts is expected to start later this year.
