Dublin Airport proposes tunnel under runway

7 September 2022

Dublin Airport Authority has submitted a planning application for a tunnel under one of its runways.

The twin-cell tunnel will provide two dual carriageways for airport vehicles to travel under runway 16/34.

The tunnel will comprise an enclosed section approximately 0.7km long, with an overall alignment of around 1.1km from entry to exit. It will be approximately 24m in external width, and approximately 5.5m in internal height from road to tunnel ceiling. The underground section will be up to 17.5m below existing ground level.

Dublin Airport Authority initially proposed the tunnel in 2019, just before the Covid pandemic devastated air travel.
